On-Site Safety Consulting

On-Site Safety Consulting

On-Site Safety Consulting is a different method of providing a safety manager to your company’s work sites without hiring a full time employee.  The safety consultant will provide all of the services as a full time employee however it will only be at a fraction of the cost.  On-Site Safety Consulting is becoming more prevalent in the construction field.

What do they do?

The safety consultant will arrive on location at any of your construction sites to conduct an on-site inspection.  The consultant will then send in a report to the appropriate manager which will discuss what was seen on site, how to correct any deficiencies and what steps should be taken on any additional projects to ensure a safe environment.  The safety consultant should also be available on call 24/7 in case of an emergency.  Therefore, the safety consultant should be located near the construction site to provide any and all emergency services.  The consultant should also provide any advice that a full time safety manager would provide your company.

What are the benefits?

The benefits of an on-site safety consultant are numerous.  To begin it will save your company money.  You will not have to pay any benefits such as workers compensation, retirement, medical insurance or provide company resources such as vehicles as the consultant is not an employee.  If the consultant causes any accidents or gets hurt on the job site, they are responsible.  This means that the consultant should carry their own professional liability and general liability insurance.  This would allow your company to not be liable if the consultant fell on the job site, thereby saving you money.  Another benefit is that they can also train your employees.  A good consultant should have the certifications to teach various courses to your employees.  This will save you time and money as the consultant can arrive on the job site to conduct any training.  This saves you money because you do not have to pull your guys off the job site for training, you do not have to pay for travel or food for your employees, and if the training ends early, your employees can walk right back to work.  This saves your company time, resources, and money, which thereby increases your profits.

How to find a good on-site safety consultant?

Call around, ask other companies if they know of anyone and be sure once you find someone to ask them questions.  It is easy to find trainers for various courses and people who claim they are “experts.”  However, some people have never been to a construction site before, but they claim to know the answers to your questions.  Be sure to ask the person how many times they have worked on site, what references do they have from other companies that have been provided similar work, and don’t be afraid to ask for a copy of their qualifications.  With all of the above information you will be able to make an informed decision on if the person is qualified assist you effectively.

On-site safety consulting or drive-by safety consulting is becoming a new trend in construction.  It saves the company time and money, while allowing them to receive all of the benefits of a full time safety manager.  A safety consultant should be qualified, experienced and have the necessary resources to answer any question you may have in regards to your specific work site.

Summer Work at Man Made and Natural Disaster Sites: Information You Need to Know

Summer Work at Man Made and Natural Disaster Sites:

Information You Need to Know

April showers bring May flowers.  A month or two will go by and summer will bring hurricanes and tornados.  What does this mean for construction companies, clean-up crews and various other companies that assist with reconstructing?  Work.

Not only should these companies get their 10 hour OSHA General Industry or Construction card, but they should also receive a 16 hour Disaster Site certification.  This certification is important because it will allow these companies to work on the site of these natural disasters safely.  This course will teach various topics such as Incident Command Systems, decontamination procedures, and traumatic incident stress debriefing.  Therefore, these companies will be able to appropriately respond to any man made or natural disaster.  These businesses would be able to show up to the site of Hurricane Sandy, the New Orleans oil spill or the Texas fertilizer plant explosion and safely clear the scene of the hazards and rebuild.

This course is an OSHA course, which means you will receive a certification through the OSHA office.  Individuals must have a 10 hour General Industry or Construction OSHA course in order to take the Disaster Site course.  But what are the benefits, why should you take the course?  You are able to work safely on a disaster site by following the appropriate guidelines; your company is able to arrive on the location of any disaster site to aid in the clean-up; and your employees will receive proper training which will lower the risk of injury or illness which lowers the cost to your company.

The warmer weather is slowly working its way in.  When there is warmer weather there are natural disasters across the country.  From hurricanes, to tornados or wild fires; many construction, demolition, and utility crews will be working in full force.  Other crews will report to the scene of terrible accidents such as the Texas fertilizer plant, bomb scenes or sink holes.  It is very important for these people to have the proper training to ensure their safety and well-being.  The OSHA 7600, Disaster Site Worker course will enable employees in countless fields to be employed safely during the summer.  Companies will be able to send employees to work in many locations on many scenes, which in turn will create a profit for the company.  This course is not just an awareness course, it allows for companies to take advantage of the small window of opportunity, summer and most importantly in this economy, obtain work.

How to get the Most out of Your ISNetworld® Account

How to get the Most out of Your ISNetworld® Account

Getting the most out of your ISNetworld® account subscription should be a top priority for your business—if it is not already. With growing marketplace competition, differentiating your business from your competitors is becoming an arduous task in and of itself. And, simply becoming compliant with your primary contractors (aka owner-clients) via the ISNetworld® framework is not enough. You have to look beyond the obvious and use your ISNetworld® subscription to yield every advantage you can so as to maximize the benefits to your company. Take these seven steps to leverage your ISNetworld® account to reap the rewards of a competitive advantage:

Step #1:  Get your account in good standing

It goes without saying, but before you can get a competitive advantage your business must be in good standing with ISNetworld®. The MSQ questionnaires must be completed, all written safety programs submitted and reviewed, insurance must be current, etc. all before your account can transcend the original purposes intended by ISNetworld®. Take some time and get your account compliant so that you can make moves your competition is not thinking about. If you need help with this process, look at some of our other articles for additional resources.

Step #2: Use the ISNetworld® Logo

According to the ISNetworld® Trademark and Logo Policy, there are three categories in which an organization may use the ISNetworld® logo, which could lead to an advantage over those who do not use the logo. Data providers, contractors, and insurance agents each have a specific logo available for use in marketing materials such as brochures or business cards. ISNetworld® also permits the usage of the logos on corporate websites so long as the logo hyperlinks back to the ISNetworld® homepage.

As of the date of this article, ISNetworld® reported that there are over 45,000 contractor and supplier account subscriptions. Furthermore, only 270 owner-client subscriptions were reported on the homepage. This would indicate a significant opportunity for many small to mid-sized business to take advantage their status as an account subscriber, especially when some companies do not have an ISNetworld® account or refuse to acquire one.

Step #3: 270 Potential Customers of your Product or Service

It is exceedingly obvious that since ISNetworld® makes their illustrious owner-client companies public knowledge by publishing them on the website, sale initiatives could be begin by contacting these companies. A major component of the Request for Proposal (RFP) process and other avenues of competitive bidding center around whether or not your company has an ISNetworld® account. Having an account established does save time and one can infer that attempts to acquire a Master Service Agreement or contract will like lead to a discussion on having an ISNetworld® account subscription. It is possible that one could contact the companies listed as owner-clients and negotiate a contract of which we know ISNetworld® will surface to the top as a viable requirement.

Step #4: Anything Measured…Improves

Surprisingly enough, one major benefit to using ISNetworld® is that many safety performance metrics are calculated for your company. Someone does need to input the data and that data should be accurate. A good strategy to employ in your company is to look at your severity rate, DART rate, TRIR, and other performance metrics. You will also be able to determine what the average incident rates are for your company on a national level. If you are above, below, or just average, make adjustments as necessary by striving for continual improvement.

Step #5: Request for Proposals (RFP’s) and Competitive Bidding

Leverage the fact your company has an ISNetworld® account. We have already discussed the fact you should use their logo within the granted permissions requirements, but when bidding out jobs for large general contractors leaving out the fact you have an ISNetworld® account could be a big mistake. It is advised that every ISNetworld® subscriber make the most of their account by letting procurement officers know about your willingness to be transparent and low risk. Competitive bid writing can involve a prowess and many writers need all the help they can get to maintain low risk, high quality, and services/products at competitive pricing.

Flaunt your workers’ compensation experience modification rating (EMR), your low total recordable incident rate (TRIR), and the fact you have suitable safety programs. Most of all, you can feel confident that ISNetworld® has vetted your organization and found these rates to be verifiable. Including material that is collectively available, verified, and accurate can be a major selling point. Now, get started writing on all those RFP’s!

Step #6: Get Featured

Here’s an exercise you can perform on your own. Go to Google.com or Bing.com or your favorite search engine and type in the following:

“ISNetworld Construction”

Did you see any “featured” companies in the top ten? Now, search for your company and ISNetworld®. Is your company featured the same way? Probably not unless you have reached the spotlight and are featured. Call ISNetworld® and see what the cost may be to get a little more exposure, if you need it. Marketing is often an overlooked component of business for smaller companies and getting ahead means getting the most bang out of each advertising dollar. Remember this…not every competitor is going to subscribe to ISNetworld® so be sure that you dominate by exposing your status!

Step #7: Use Features!

ISNetworld® probably has more features than most account subscribers are using, which means that most subscribers are overlooking potentially valuable assets. For example, you can upload and maintain employee training records. ID cards can be made and issued for your employees. You can even get ISNetworld® stickers for your hard hats! Take a peak throughout your account and take advantage of the features you pay for, but likely fail to use. You might even find something you like!

ISNetworld®: What They Really Do and Why You Need Them.

ISNetworld®:  What They Really Do and Why You Need Them.

ISNetworld® is a third party contractor that provides a database to maintain a copy of records.  ISNetworld® specializes in collecting documentation on behalf of various companies to ensure you are meeting specific requirements in order to remain compliant.  ISNetworld® uses the Review and Verification Services or RAVS® to determine if your information and documentation is correct.  ISNetworld® states it uses experts in completing the verification process and determining if you met all the regulations.

ISNetworld® will collect documentation such as:

1.       Contractor Acknowledgement Form

2.       Certificate of Insurance

3.       OSHA 300 Forms

4.       Safety Programs

5.       Training Records

Once ISNetworld® has completed the collection process they will either accept or deny your documentation.  The goal is to get all of the documentation submitted accepted thereby giving your company compliance.

Before submitting the documentation required you should collect all of the appropriate documentation.  This sometimes is a daunting task because some companies do not keep good records of training and accidents.  It is important not to fake these documents because if you are caught it could cancel your contract with ISNetworld®, thereby losing the contract with the company you are conducting business with.  It may not be worth faking documentation if it loses you a large contract which is keeping you in business.

Now that you have a complete idea of what ISNetworld® really does let’s discuss why you need them.  Your company needs them because the companies you are working with require you to submit documentation through them.  It is easier for larger companies who require ISNetworld® to ensure you are maintaining and complying with safety initiatives when they have to do very little to review your documentation.  Large companies have the luxury of logging into a program and looking at your dashboard grade or quickly scanning to see if you have an orange exclamation point or green check mark.  It’s easy for them to determine if you are in compliance or not, which thereby allows them to determine if they should keep their contract with you or not.

In this economy it is not a hard decision to keep or loose contracts.  Therefore, if you are required to maintain ISNetworld® compliance you most likely will do it.  However, there are some of you out there who are very frustrated with ISNetworld® and would rather give up than continue to fight for compliance.  It is understandable that you are frustrated with ISNetworld® after attempting to complete the process for months or even years.  However, stick with it.  If you need help then look for a consultant or safety professional that can assist you.  It is easier to pay someone to help you for a low price than loose contracts because of a third party record keeper, because in reality that is all that ISNetworld® is.

ISNetworld® is needed to keep your contracts, go through the motions and maintain compliance.  If you need help find it, but remember ISNetworld® is simply a secretarial service that keeps track of your documents.  If you go through the process with that in mind it may be easier to deal with the ups and downs of the process.

ISNetworld®: How to Write a Safety Program

ISNetworld®:  How to Write a Safety Program

Writing a safety program designed to be approved by ISNetworld® can be difficult.  However, it is possible.  The first step is to read the additional comments section for each individual requirement.  You must also take one step further if that requirement cites a specific section of law.  The laws usually are OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Association), ANSI (American National Standards Institute), EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), DOT (Department of Transportation) and API RP (American Petroleum Institute Recommended Practices).  Then you must look up the legal standard to determine what steps or specific conditions are necessary to meet the requirement.

Please remember, that becoming OSHA compliant is NOT the same as becoming ISNetworld® compliant.  This is because under the OSHA standards, OSHA may require sections 1-20 to be met to become OSHA compliant.  ISNetworld® may only require standard 1, 5-8, and 14 to become ISNetworld® complaint.  Therefore, just because the company is ISNetworld® compliant does not mean OSHA compliance.   For more information check out ISNetworld® and OSHA:  Separate Entities and Different Intentions.

After looking at each of the requirements, the additional guidance section and any legal standard your next step is to start writing the program.   First write a purpose or objective section.  These are easy.  For an example let’s use CPR as the required safety program.  The purpose would be something simple such as:  All employees shall receive training and know when to correctly use CPR.  The purpose should be short, simple and no more than one sentence.

The third step is to begin writing the requirements.  During this step you may not be able to write something as requirement one, two, three and four because it may not make sense.  You will most likely have additional sentences with the requirement imbedded within a paragraph.

For example:  If the requirement states each employee must receive training at the beginning of employment, annually thereafter and if something changes.  You may want to entitle a section as training and under the section write all the requirements your company will require, this can be in addition to the ISNetworld® requirements.  See below.

          Training:

Each employee shall receive the proper training to become a certified lay responder in CPR.  All employees shall receive the training before their first assignment and annually thereafter.  Each employee must also be retrained if any standard change.  Further, the training shall not be charged at the expense of the employee.  The training shall be conducted during normal business hours with a certified instructor.

Continue onto each individual requirement and write out each standard as your company desires.  As long as it meets the individual requirements of ISNetworld® your company may expand as you deem necessary.

Once all the sections are written accordingly, organize it in a logical manner.  Remember to keep like sections together, as long as it is in the safety program it does not have to be in any specific order.

Next, it is time to submit your program.

Here are a few things to remember when uploading your program and submitting page numbers to ISNetworld®:

1.      Put page numbers on the safety program, it makes it easier to locate things later.

2.      Each requirement must be met.  Therefore, for each section you must select yes for the appropriate requirement.  If you select no, your program will be denied.

3.      If your program is a total of five pages do NOT write the requirement is contained in pages 1-5 as it is not specific enough and most likely will get denied.

4.      You can leave the comments section blank.  However, if your program was denied and the information is contained within the program bold that requirement and resubmit it.  Then, in the comments section write “see bold.”

5.      Do not be sarcastic in the comments section.  For example, if you are a sole proprietor and feel a program does not apply to you do not write a sarcastic comment.

Example:

I am a sole proprietor.  This program does not apply to me because if I die or become unconscious I will not be able to administer CPR to myself.

ISNetowrld® will deny the program.   Therefore, write the program with all the elements needed.

Once your program is uploaded you have completed the process!  Now it’s just time to sit back and wait for approval.  Just to summarize the steps needed to write your own safety program:

1.      Read the ISNetworld® requirements.

2.      Read the additional guidance section for each requirement.

3.      Read any additional law ISNetworld® cites.

4.      Write a simple purpose or objective.

5.      Write out each requirement.  Use headings or specific subject areas if it is easier.

6.      Organize the program in a logical order.

7.      Submit the program.

8.      Wait for approval.

9.      If denied and you believe you have met the requirement, bold the section or language needed to meet the requirement and resubmit it.  In the comments section write, “see bold.”

10.  Resubmit.

11.  Wait for approval.

12.  If denied again and you still believe the language is contained in the program call ISNetworld®.  When on the phone with a customer service representative explain to them where you believe the required language is.  The representative may be able to help you.

Remember the language contained in this guide will not gain you compliance.  You must read all the requirements and put in the time to write the program to meet your company’s needs.  Good luck!

ISNetworld®: Finding Answers to Your Questions.

ISNetworld®:  Finding Answers to Your Questions.

Many of you have called ISNetworld® at your wits end trying to figure out how to complete a questionnaire or what to do if certain provisions do not apply to your safety programs.  You believe they have answered your questions hit the submit button and a week or two later it comes back “Denied.”  Frustrated you call back, get a different department and they tell you something else.  You are not alone in your frustrations.

Many people have worked on their ISNetworld® accounts for various companies for months and sometimes years and still have not gained compliance.  However, ISNetworld® would like you to believe that you can fix the problems on your own and with great ease.  Most of the time this is not the case.

Here are a few tips for submitting your safety programs through ISNetworld®:

1.      Do NOT answer any of the requirements “no,” it needs to state yes.

2.      If your program gets denied because a requirement was not met, however, you believe you have met that requirement.  Resubmit it with that requirement bolded and in the comments section state, see bold.

3.      Take the time to read the additional guidance section; sometimes it is helpful to determine what exactly needs to be included in your program.

4.      Do not just copy and paste things off the internet and put your company name on the top.  Most of the time all of the elements are not included.  Some of the time the requirements may have changed and the program is now outdated.  Be sure to use your own program.

5.      As tempting as it may be, do NOT write in the comment sections how this requirement or program does not apply to you and state the reason why.  For example:

a.       Bloodborne Pathogens does not apply to XYZ Company because the company works only with computers.  The largest risk we have is obtaining a paper cut.  Therefore, this program does not apply.

ISNetworld® does not care if you believe the program or requirement applies or not, they just want it submitted.

6.      If you have submitted 75% or more of the programs that were required, but you honestly believe that the remaining programs do not apply to you, you may ask for a variance.  A variance just means a waiver; therefore, you are asking ISNetworld® to waive the remainder of the programs.  This does not mean it is guaranteed, you are just hoping it will be waived!

If you have called ISNetworld® and have continuously tried to find answers to your questions and are getting nowhere, you are about to lose contracts, or are just irritated with the entire process do not be afraid to call around to a few ISNetworld® consultants for help.  We recommended calling a few people and asking them specific questions to your account.  Some companies will tell you they guarantee ISNetworld® compliance in 48 hours, do not believe them.  As you know once your information is submitted to ISNetworld® it can take them some time to approve or deny your submission.  Therefore, it is impossible for anyone to gain 100% compliance in 48 hours.  Be sure you are speaking with someone with knowledge of the procedure and process.

If your company is about to lose contracts because of not being in compliance with ISNetworld® be sure to ask if they can help you quickly, some consulting companies do not have the time to devote to your company immediately.

Do not believe you are alone in this process.  There are many of you that are highly educated, have years of experience or a combination of both that are still unable to get through the compliance process with ISNetworld®.  Each department will give you a different answer to your question, or attempt to help you but their attempts are futile.  Do not get angry and begin to write sarcastic comments in the comment sections, as you most likely will get the same result as before, “Denied.”  Be patient and call around for help because you can gain compliance!

MSDS Should Not be in a drawer!

MSDS Should Not be in a drawer!

Material Data Safety Sheets are just about everywhere, companies, corporations, clear down to café’s. Many managers will place the MSDS forms in a drawer haphazardly or in a binder that is disorganized where the MSDS will just sit and no one really pays much attention to them. The information on these sheets is vital to all! The employees need to understand that certain products are a chemical and may not mix with another type of chemical without presenting threatening fumes and/or gases.

In the 70’s an older lady decided to mix two cleaning products together. She was not aware of the gas that began to emit in the air as she was cleaning her bathroom. She fell to the floor as she passed out from the fumes and was found later by her family. She lived but this all could have been avoided had she known not to mix certain chemicals together. MSDS are valuable information so that these types of possible deadly fumes can be avoided.

Most chemicals have telephone numbers on the back that if one wants information about the product or if one has an emergency they can call the number to find out what to do. Many people have called the number on the back of the chemical and if someone answers they are told to call 9-1-1! Funny huh, makes you wonder why you wasted the time to even call the tiny n umber on the back of the product. Sometimes the phone will ring off the hook, no one is there to answer the call or the call is ignored and you wind up calling an emergency number anyway.

Regardless of any mishaps, these MSDS should be accessible either by organizing the material data safety sheets alphabetically in a binder or even by organizing the information on a computer so that the MSDS information can be brought up quickly for all staff or employees. The safety sheets explain everything that one needs to know about the product and what it cannot be mixed with. So there guys, don’t throw these vital information sheets in a drawer and pile it high with other junk mail, these MSDS can save lives in critical moments. Organize the material or hire someone to do it for you! MSDS are there to help you and yours to practice safety safely!

Understanding the importance of Blood Borne Pathogens can save your life

Understanding the importance of Blood Borne Pathogens can save your life

How many times do people see someone bleeding and hurry to go to their aid? In our society today that is a wonderful thing to do because most people have a certain amount of knowledge about the transference of diseases such as AIDs and HIV. The problem with blood is that there are many different types of blood-borne pathogens that can cause serious illness to anyone who does not know what or how to deal with them. All blood should be treated as if it is infectious.

A nurse in a medical facility wears gloves to prevent him or herself from any kind of contact with blood when giving a shot or even placing an IV into a patients arm. The same nurse could easily become slack in his or her behavior and accidently stick him or herself with a needle that had been used on the patient, pricking the tip of the needle into the skin of the nurse. If the patient had an illness such as HIV then the nurse then is at risk for the disease. It is very scary when a person does not protect themselves against blood borne pathogens as that person is placing a risk of getting one of many diseases that can come from blood borne pathogens.

A mom sees someone else’s child, who has fallen off of a swing; the child is bleeding profusely from his knees and nose. The blood is literally pouring out of the kid’s nose now and the mom knows that she should not touch the blood on the child and then she thinks that “it is only a little boy and he would not have any type of disease” so she takes tissue and holds it on the child’s nose. The blood is on her hand and she had cut herself the night before on a kitchen knife, although the cut was small she is now infected! The child was born with AIDS and now the helpful mom must be tested. You do not ever want to risk your life to help another person even if it is a child. Blood borne pathogens are seriously dangerous to all human life. If you are the sort of person who needs to help others in a time of crisis, please carry the proper type of protection so you do not get sick.

It is awesome that there are still people out in the world who care about others and need to ensure that people are safe or receive care when needed. These precious people who are willing to help others should make sure that they are always prepared or they may not have a long life due to their “helpful nature”. Just carry a pair of kitchen rubber gloves and a plastic garbage bag to wear if you need to clean up or help someone who has blood on them!

A Strategy for ISNetworld® Compliance: Principles of Business

A Strategy for ISNetworld® Compliance: Principles of Business

(Republished with author permission)

For the purposes of this blog, we are going to assume that your company has already subscribed to ISNetworld®. We are also going to assume, like many small businesses, that your company has had a less than perfect safety track record. And, for this problem, we are going to offer an out-of-the-box solution using the principles of business and strategy.

As your company is probably aware, safety performance measures are becoming more and more of an evaluation tool. However, the process is not entirely fair since the way the OSHA incident rate is calculated favors larger businesses. See, OSHA assumes that a business will have 100 employees who work 2000 hours per year yielding a 200,000 hour constant. The number of OSHA recordable incidents will be multiplied by the constant of 200,000 hours and divided by the total number of hours worked by all employees at your company. Thus, if you have 10-20 employees, one or two OSHA recordable incidents will impact your company's safety performance much greater.

The second major safety metric is the experience modification rating (EMR). If your company's rating is less than 1.0, you are beating the industry average. If the EMR is greater than 1.0, your company is associated with much more risk.

With poor safety performance, your company is not likely to have a great EMR or OSHA incident rate. When this information is reported to ISNetworld® and ran through the verification process, your company could get dropped as a preferred vendor. So, what's the solution? Firstly, get your company's safety performance record on an improvement track or else your company faces significant long-term liabilities and losses.

Secondly, if your company has really awful safety metrics beyond repair, we recommend changing how your company does business. There are many shelf companies out there that can be purchased for under a $1,000 with a few years of legitimate business operations, tax returns, and some even come with their own domain names, interestingly enough.

Buying a shelf company is cheap and can be completed quickly. The next step would be to begin your new business enterprise by acquiring your old company. Either the shelf company and the current company can merge and form a new entity or the shelf company can acquire the other entity altogether. In the end, the result is one and the same.

During a merger or acquisition, the parent or surviving company (e.g. LLC, Corp) will assume operations and control of the old company, but can have the option of re-establishing an EMR and the previous safety metrics would belong to the old entity, not the newly formed corporation. Of course, you will have to run through the motions of getting a new Tax ID, but that only takes about 5 minutes online. If you need help with the merger and acquisition process, hire a corporate attorney who can help you.

The major benefit here is that your previously held contracts are likely to be transferred to the newly established entity and you will be able to continue business operations. Your safety metrics will need to re-evaluated to reflect these changes and you will have to work things out with whatever agency is handling your workers' compensation.

The downside is that ISNetworld® will likely make you cancel the old account under the old business entity and create a new account, but make sure that your clients on your subscriber account are transferred. You may have some hoops to jump through, but in the end you can essentially reset your safety performance record with OSHA and ISNetworld®.

We cannot stress enough, however, that if you do not change how your company operates its safety program, you will in all likelihood suffer the woes associated with inadequate safety programs.

The Future of ISNetworld®

The Future of ISNetworld®

(Republished with author permission)

This blog has been geared towards a discussion on ISNetworld®, which is a company that serves as an intermediary between suppliers and prime contractors. The subject matter herein aims to discuss the future of ISNetworld® and its growing popularity. That is, with more and more large, publicly traded companies moving towards utilizing the services of ISNetworld®, what is the impact on smaller businesses and contractors?

It would seem that since many larger companies are using ISNetworld® for review services, that the demand for smaller companies to acquire a subscription is greater than ever before. Take, for example, Marathon Oil and Hess--two very large oil companies--who have a very high demand for small businesses to fill in the gaps in their up-, down-, and mid-stream operations. In order to be considered to work for these companies, small businesses must subscribe to ISNetworld® and meet the criteria outlined in their account depending on industry type.

The demand for review and accuracy services appears to be quite high. That is, large businesses like Marathon and Hess usually have a limited environmental health and safety (EHS) team to monitor, track, review, and report the various safety metrics associated with their subcontractors. So what it essentially comes down to is many prime contractors are using ISNetworld® as a solution to review their vendors from a more risk management perspective. This is analogous to how many grocery chains implemented self-checkout stations where the customer bags his/her own groceries, checks out, and pays without the presence of an actual employee. ISNetworld® presents the requirements in each supplier's account and makes them submit documents, answer questions, and provide other information--all of which is reviewed for accuracy by ISNetworld®.

The future, therefore, of ISNetworld® would seemingly be bright. The company provides a solution where larger prime contractors can reduce the number of manhours where employees must determine certain risk factors pertaining to subcontractors. The burden, like at the grocery store, then is on the backs, so to speak, of the smaller business entities to maintain compliance with ISNetworld®. Otherwise, they may lose their contract as a supplier, something that is usually held in a negative light.
